Technology News: Tablet was originally scheduled to debut 'late March' -- The much-anticipated iPad tablet computer from Apple Inc. will start hitting U.S. store shelves on April 3, slightly later than originally planned.

This morning, Apple finally announced the release date for its anticipated iPad, detailing that the tablet device will be available starting Saturday, April 3.

The early April weekend launch will see only the Wi-Fi model of the touch-screen device being made available, starting at $499, with the 3G model being introduced later that month. Apple detailed that these dates only apply to the U.S., with international releases in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom to come towards the end of April. Sadly no specific dates or pricing for the international launch have been confirmed as of yet, however Macworld UK has been speculating about the price for British customers.

In the lead up to the official launch, Apple will be running a pre-order scheme, which starts March 12. Then on April 3, customers based in the U.S. will have their Wi-Fi iPad delivered to their doorstep or to their local Apple Store for pickup, whichever they choose. No word yet on the official launch or delivery date for the 3G model.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who revealed the iPad back in January, said the following about the upcoming launch: ÒWeÕre excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.Ó

Reports popped up early this week hinting that the iPad would launch on March 26, with further rumors suggesting that iPad’s would be arriving in stores for staff training as early as March 10. Of course word from Apple regarding the launch has now set the record straight, confirming the speculated delay until April.

So with the iPad launch details now laid bare, will you be picking one up at launch? If so are you opting for the Wi-Fi or 3G model? Let us know in the comments.

No exact date or UK pricing details were given, but the company said the device would be in U.S. shops on April 3, slightly later than originally planned.
NEW YORK -- The much-anticipated iPad tablet computer from Apple Inc. will start hitting U.S. store shelves on April 3, slightly later than originally planned.
SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc said the first iPads will be in U.S. stores on April 3 and hit nine international markets from Japan to the United Kingdom later in April.

News from Cupertino, California this morning has Apple fans in a tizzy: the "magical and revolutionary" (yes, that's really how Apple describes it) iPad now has a confirmed launch date. According to an Apple press release, the iPad will be available in the U.S. on Saturday, April 3rd in Wi-Fi only models and later that month in 3G. Also by month-end, all editions of the iPad will become available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K. Pre-orders will start March 12th on www.apple.com.

Although we know that many people are already confirmed buyers, there are a lot of fence-sitters out there still wondering why they need an iPad when they already have an iPhone (or iPod Touch, or netbook, or laptop, etc.). If that's you, we've come up with a list of confirmed iPad apps that may convince you otherwise.

Sponsor

1) The New York Times

No surprise here. The NY Times was actually one of the applications demonstrated during the iPad announcement in January. Their native application lets you save stories, watch video, zoom in and out on photos and virtually "flip" through the paper without dirtying up your fingers with newsprint. The news stories are updated whenever the device has an internet connection.

2) The Wall St. Journal

We haven't seen it in action yet, but News Corp.'s Rupert Murdoch has apparently been telling people that there's an iPad under lock-and-key in the WSJ's building. "We've been allowed to work on one," he told members of the Real Estate Board of New York during a luncheon this past week. We imagine its features will be very much on par with those in the NY Times app, as described above.

3) Need for Speed Shift (Game)

The iPad represents a whole new gaming platform. It's a handheld device like the iPhone, but one with a much larger screen. That means video games will look great - more like games you play on your TV via game consoles like the Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii. Electronic Arts is one of the first to develop for the iPad and their "Need for Speed Shift" racing game, also demoed during Apple's announcement, has been redesigned from the iPhone version into one just for the iPad. They've scaled up the images to fit the larger screen and the results, from what we've seen so far, look great.

4) Penguin Books

Penguin CEO John Makinson spoke to a London audience this past week about his company's plans to build iPad-ready books. Instead of releasing text-only publications, Penguin books will be more like apps including embedded video, audio and streaming. "The .ePub format, which is the standard for ebooks at the present, is designed to support traditional narrative text," said Makinson, "but not this cool stuff that we're now talking about. So for the time being at least we'll be creating a lot of our content as applications, for sale on app stores and HTML, rather than in ebooks. The definition of the book itself is up for grabs."

5) CondŽ Nast Magazines: Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and Glamour

Enjoy magazines but hate how they clutter up your house? That will never be a problem again thanks to the iPad. According to the NY Times, the large publishing firm has big plans for their periodicals. GQ will have a tablet version of its April issue ready. Vanity Fair and Wired will follow with their June issues, and The New Yorker and Glamour will have issues in the summer. Already, the company's iPhone application for GQ that proves CondŽ Nast gets how to develop for new platforms. The GQ app is not a simple digitized magazine, but includes features that embrace the mobile web. For example, you can tap through on an ad to go to a company's website or tap a song in a music review to download it.

Wired, specifically, gave us all a look at their iPad app earlier this month and it's incredible. Although they actually called it their "tablet" app - Wired isn't limiting themselves to one platform - we know one of the first places we'll see it is Apple's new slate device.

6) Your Student Newspaper

In addition to the big names like the NY Times and WSJ, colleges will also begin to use the iPad for distributing their highly localized news. One college, Abilene Christian University, has already confirmed they've developed an app for their paper, "The Optimist." "We want to be up and running and there when they're ready for us," said Professor Kenneth Pybus. You can bet they won't be the last college to launch for iPad, either.

7) Disney iPad Apps

Walt Disney's Robert Iger recently informed investors that Disney will develop all sorts of iPad applications that will range from games to digital books and who knows what else? "We find that the iPad has a lot of potential. We think it's a really compelling device," he said. Iger also predicts that the iPad will be "a game-changer in terms of enabling us to create essentially new forms of content." We can't wait to see what the creatives at Disney come up with.

Also of note: Disney owns Marvel Comics and that has some speculating that comic book apps are on the list of soon-to-arrive Disney iPad apps.

8) iPhone Apps, Transformed

Although iPhone apps will work on the iPad without any updates required, developers who want to redesign their iPhone apps specifically for the iPad can do so.

For an example of how great these will look when they do this, check out 1Password. Already available as an iPhone app, this app helps you create strong passwords for web services and accounts, remembers them for you and stores them right in your browser. Their iPad app, shown off on their blog here, shows just how attractive - oh, we'll say it - just downright gorgeous - iPad apps will be.

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) began announcing this morning that the iPad with wi-fi will start going on sale April 3, with the 3G version coming later in the month. The question is, however: will they have enough for all of us?

It's official: iPad's launching in the US on April 3, with the 3G model coming later in the month. Pre-orders start next week, March 12. It's just about on time.

April 3, interestingly, is a Saturday, and exactly 59 66 days after the iPad launch, placing it just outside the 60 availability window Jobs promised for the non-3G model. Apple's still not setting an exact date for the 3G model, promising late April, meaning it stay within the 90-day cocoon. Pre-orders start a week from today.

For folks uh-broad—Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK—both vanilla Wi-Fi and 3G models are launching simultaneously in "late April."

While we now know it's April 3, what we're still wondering about D-Day: How many native iPad apps are launching with it? Will there be lines? (Well, probably.) But will there be shortages, as some analysts have suggested? Also, Apple says iPad will be available through "select Authorized Retailers." Does that mean Best Buy will get in on the launch action?

So, raise your hand if you're waiting for the 3G model!

We wrote repeatedly about Apple’s odd and often unfair application approval process. Instead of fixing it, Apple is just getting weirder and weirder about what apps are allowed in the store. The latest example is the sudden disappearance of several Wi-Fi stumbler applications from the app store.

Cult of Mac noticed that Apple has removed apps such as WiFi-Where, WiFiFoFum and yFy Network Finder. These apps scan Wi-Fi networks in the vicinity, which is not very different from simply going to the Wi-Fi Networks menu on your iPhone.

However, according to a post on WiFi-Where creator’s website, the app was removed from the App Store for “using private frameworks to access wireless information.”

The odd thing about this is the fact that some of these apps have been available in the App Store for years. Removing them now will make iPhone app developers even more uncertain about the future of their apps, as it seems they can be arbitrarily removed at any time, for vague reasons.

The iPad from three angles

Apple’s iPad tablet is expected to hit store shelves sometime later this month, but now analysts are saying that recent checks with Taiwan indicate some slight production delays. Think Equity said iPad production was supposed to ramp up in February, but now volumes continue to be low in the first few days of March. Analysts at Canaccord Adams said the problems could limit initial availability to roughly 300,000 units this month (much lower than initial estimates of 1 million). [The WSJ]

—It’s still unknown what Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) plans to do after acquiring Quattro Wireless, a mobile advertising network, but a new job listing may shed some light on the matter. Apple is seeking a “Senior Interactive Web Developer” in Boston to develop a front-end Web user interface for the “development of compelling, interactive digital advertising experiences.” The developer will “be involved in client discussions, proof-of-concept coding, working with and adding to the existing framework, production deliverables and more.” The position will help the iPhone maker “redefine” ads on mobile devices. [Apple Insider]

Apple has pulled multiple applications that help consumers find nearby hotspots from the iTunes App Store. Developers of the WiFi-Where application, the WiFiFoFum and yFy have all reported that Apple notified them that their apps were banned for “using private frameworks to access wireless information.” Reportedly, apps that use GPS—and not Wi-Fi—to find local hotspots are still in the store.
